Bright Light Therapy for Your Health

Light is essential for our well-being and performance.

Each human cell synchronizes its activity with the sun – the main food source for most life forms on Earth. But it’s not always possible to enjoy the full daylight in a natural setting. Modern lifestyles with shift work, long-distance travel, and indoor office lighting, as well as changes of the seasons affect the amount of light we get regularly exposed to. Reduced daytime light causes many problems: from winter blues, mood swings and general fatigue to anxiety, sleep deprivation, carbohydrate cravings, and dampened spirits. These symptoms usually appear in the autumn and winter months when nights are getting longer and daylight is scarce. People who work in light-deprived environments or as shift workers during the night can also suffer from similar symptoms. The challenge introduced by northern latitudes and modern lifestyles is that ambient daylight is not often regularly available.

Bright light therapy is an effective way to supplement natural light.

Bright light has been used as an effective treatment for these symptoms since the 1980’s, but it has been mostly administered through the eyes that are known to be sensitive to light. This required people to sit in front of a bright light lamp for an hour each day. Researchers at the University of Oulu discovered in 2008-2010 that apart from the eyes, areas of the human brain are also sensitive to light thanks to the same photoreceptor-proteins that had been discovered by US and UK researchers in the eye just 10 years earlier, and that those brain areas can be reached by light through ear canals, the tissue of the ear, and skull bone. The skull of large mammals, including humans, lets light pass through naturally, and in ordinary daylight conditions the brain is exposed to light always during daytime.

Valkee light therapy is quick and convenient.

The biggest advantages of the Valkee earlight therapy are convenience and efficiency. The device also uses a lot less energy than traditional bright light lamps, and it does not cause eye irritation. Using the Valkee LED-headset to shine bright light on the brain for only 12 minutes a day can significantly raise energy levels, mood, and improve sense of well-being.
